VVTL-i is why the Celica GT-S' engine breathes easier. And why the leadfooted driver next to you won't... Picture yourself at a stoplight, another sports coupe alongside, its driver impatient for the light to turn green. But when it does, your Celica GT-S' combination of Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and high-lift cams is going to make all the difference. The Celica GT-S has one of the highest specific output engines in the world and it "sticks like glue through corners."** This is true performance.

Every relationship between man and machine should be as immediately rewarding as this. Consider the Celica's tach: Redline begins in the 12 o'clock position, directly below the windshield, which makes deciding when to shift virtually instinctual. Logic, not decoration, determines the placement of controls in the Celica cockpit. If you are already thinking "race car," just wait until you step on the drilled aluminum accelerator pedal.

Much of the credit's due to the VVTL-i system incorporated in the GT-S 1.8-liter double overhead cam (DOHC) powerplant. This technology helps produce 180 horsepower - 100 horsepower per liter of displacement - giving the GT-S one of the highest specific output engines on the planet. Harness all that power with what you see below and you've got a ride that's definitely not for the faint of heart.

- MacPherson strut independent front suspension - Double-wishbone independent rear suspension - 6-speed manual transmission (GT-S) - 10.8" power-assisted ventilated front brakes (GT-S) - 10.6" solid rear disc brakes (GT-S)

Its high-tensile-strength steel structure has crumple zones designed to deform before the energy of an impact reaches the cabin. Standard dual front air bags (SRS),* side-impact-absorbing door beams and soft upper interior trim should also help set your mind at ease. As should the safety features below:

- Available driver and front passenger side-impact air bags (SRS)* - 3-point seatbelts in all positions - Front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters - Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) on driver's belt, Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR/ELR) on all other seatbelts - Adjustable front seatbelt shoulder anchors - Available Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) - 5-mph front and rear bumpers - Hood hold-down hooks - Daytime Running Lights (DRL) with auto on/off feature - Center high-mount stop lamp (CHMSL)
